Pharma is defending exorbitant pricing of innovative, life sustaining and lifesaving medications worldwide. Not a day goes by without a news story reporting that one country or another is up in arms regarding the price of drug XYZ or P123. Drug companies point to the societal benefits to be gained from their medication in order to justify the high cost—in effect, putting a price on a life.

The healthcare sustainability song is playing—maybe to various scores. Some say the music is a lament, a funeral dirge. Maybe it is a blues song, the way the late great Jeff Healy would do it.

Could we insert “sustainable” for “unforgettable” in Nate King Coles 1951 hit?  Roy Romanow was quoted as saying “Medicare is as sustainable as we want it to be” so let’s go with:
